Types of Hire

There are two main types of hire for a car with driver in Sri Lanka: Round Trip (normally multi-day) and One Way (normally single-day). Pick the one that suits your itinerary best, or combine them.

Round Trip Hire

The driver accompanies you throughout your journey and returns to the starting location. You are not required to travel back with the driver, but the return distance is still charged.

  • Per-km rate, typically 100–200 LKR/km depends on car type.
  • A minimum daily distance applies, cumulatively across the trip — e.g. a 100 km/day minimum over 10 days with 800 km actually travelled is billed for 1,000 km.
  • Daily cost typically lands at USD 55–65/day for a standard car. Use the Trip Cost Calculator for a precise estimate.
  • Best for: most island-wide itineraries — usually the most economical option unless your distances are short or you stay in one place.

One Way Hire

The driver drops you off and returns empty to the starting point — similar to a taxi.

  • Per-km rate, typically 100–200 LKR/km depends on car type.
  • The driver covers their own meals and accommodation.
  • You will need to arrange your own transport for day trips at the destination — taxis and tuk-tuks add up quickly in tourist areas.
  • Best for: airport transfers, short transfers, or when several one-way hires are cheaper than a single round-trip. Compare both with the Trip Cost Calculator.

Which one to choose?

For most multi-destination trips, round-trip is cheaper and simpler. If you are staying mostly in one or two places, a series of one-way hires plus local taxis/tuk-tuks can work out cheaper. When in doubt, compare both with the calculator.
