Types of Driver

Drivers offering car-and-driver hire in Sri Lanka fall into three broad categories. The level of training, the price and the experience differ significantly between them.

1. Tourist Guide Lecturer

The highest service level. Tourist Guide Lecturers are trained and approved by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and may both drive and provide guided tours at heritage sites and attractions.

  • Chauffeur Tourist Guide Lecturer — drives small groups (up to 7 passengers) in air-conditioned vehicles, either independently or for a tour company.
  • National Tourist Guide Lecturer — qualified to guide small and large groups, including bus and coach tours, often working alongside a separate driver.

2. Tourist Driver (Tourist Chauffeur)

A category introduced in 2005 to handle the growth of inbound tourism. Tourist Drivers are trained and approved by the SLTDA.

  • Cannot officially deliver guided tours at heritage sites, but can usually arrange a local site guide for an extra fee.
  • Many have strong local knowledge or language skills — the difference with a Guide Lecturer is the qualification, not always the ability.
  • Beware of unapproved drivers — always verify a driver’s current SLTDA identification, not just claims on a website.

3. Taxi Driver

A general taxi driver with no tourism-specific training. Some pick up tourist experience around the airport or popular destinations, but expect a basic point-to-point transfer rather than a tour experience.
